With its cutting-edge facilities and high-fidelity simulators, MASTC organizes various compulsory surgical training courses for all HA surgical trainees during their specialist training, and attracts external professional institutes to have their clinical training activities being held in MASTC.
General Surgery
Laparoscopic General Surgery Course, jointly organized with Surgical Skills Centre of HKU / The CUHK Jockey Club Minimally Invasive Surgical Skills Centre alternatively, is a mandatory training for Higher Surgical Trainees (HSTs) in General Surgery. It covers a wide range of topics, including laparoscopic intra-operative cholangiogram (IOC) and laparoscopic common bile duct exploration, and techniques of stapled anastomosis in laparoscopic colorectal surgery, etc.
Basic Surgical Training
Basic Surgical Skills Course (BSSC), jointly organized with the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong (CSHK) and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd), is a mandatory course for all Basic Surgical Trainees (BSTs) under the Hong Kong Intercollegiate Board of Surgical Colleges (HKICBSC) membership training scheme. It educates on principles of good practice in theatre etiquette, knot tying, suturing, haemostasis, anastomosis, surgical diathermy, ergonomics for endoscopic surgery, correct handling and use of surgical instruments, etc.
Urology
Basic & Advanced Laparoscopic and Endoscopic Urology Courses, jointly organized with the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong (CSHK), are mandatory courses for Higher Surgical Trainees (HSTs) in Urology, which includes percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) and transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) in basic course, whilst laparoscopic nephrectomy and upper urinary tract procedures as well as Laparoscopic pelvic surgery in advanced course.
Gynaecology
Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) Fundamental Surgical Skills Workshop
The workshop aims to train 1st year O&G resident trainees the safe operating techniques for basic practical skills in O&G, proper handling and use of surgical instruments, different types of sutures satisfactorily, fetal blood sampling satisfactorily using FBS model, etc.
HA Introductory & Intermediate Level Gynaecological Endoscopic Surgery Workshops
The introductory workshop is to provide training on endoscopic surgical skills to 1st or 2nd year O&G resident trainees, covering topics of basic setup and techniques for gynaecological endoscopic surgery (GES), patient selection and pre-op counselling, basics of electrosurgery, etc. The Intermediate workshop provides training on endoscopic surgical skills to 2nd or 3rd year trainees, covering topics of hysteroscopic surgery and complications, advanced bipolar, adnexal surgery, and complications of laparoscopic surgery, etc.
Advanced Gynaecological Laparoscopic Suturing Workshop
The workshop is to provide advanced suturing training for higher trainees and / or junior specialists of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G), which covers basics for laparoscopic suturing, extracorporeal and intracorporeal knot tying, closure and vertical of horizontal wound, etc.
Orthopaedics & Traumatology
Basic Orthopaedic Bioskill Workshop (BOBW), jointly organized with The Hong Kong College of Orthopaedic Surgeons, is to provide basic surgical skills training including trauma surgery, hand surgery, knee arthroscopy, cemented hemiarthroplasty, tendon repair and nerve repair, etc.
